Rigid Chain Drive - COS Tribune

Moving a telescopic grandstand independently of floor friction.

A telescopic grandstand that extends and retracts without relying on the grip of drive wheels against the floor. This is the principle behind the rigid chain technology used by COS: a mechanical drive system that ensures controlled and synchronised movement.

The development of this solution grew from COS's experience maintaining retractable grandstands from different manufacturers. Following engineering and testing, COS installed its first rigid-chain-driven grandstands in 2010.

How does it work?

A central gearmotor drives a mechanical transmission connecting both sides of the grandstand. Rigid chains push the platforms out and pull them back in, keeping the movement synchronised.

Unlike conventional friction-driven systems, the driving force is not transmitted through wheels that must grip the floor. No additional downward pressure on traction rollers is therefore required to generate movement.

The advantages of rigid chain drive

The result is a robust, precise drive system with low maintenance requirements. Independence from floor friction is an important technical advantage, particularly in multifunctional venues where flooring conditions require special consideration.

COS telescopic grandstands are custom-engineered in accordance with EN 13200 and manufactured at our EN 1090-certified production facility in Oudenaarde, Belgium.
